Considered by some to be the father of the Thai silk industry, Jim Thompson not only left a legacy of fine craftsmanship and design, but also his famous residence - a structure of adjoining traditional Thai wooden houses.
A must for any visitor is a tour of the stately Grand Palace set amongst a myriad of temples near to the Chao Praya river with its bustle of boat traffic and street markets. The Grand Palace includes Wat Phra Kaew, home to the famous and revered Emerald Buddha. Nearby is the renowned Wat Pho, with its massive golden reclining Buddha and site of the original school of Thai massage.
Lumpini Stadium, home of 'Muay Thai' or Thai boxing is a few minutes by taxi from Aspen Suites where evening bouts take place on a regular basis.
Worthwhile excursions outside the city include the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, the legendary Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi as well as various floating markets and the seaside resort of Pattaya further afield.
